Right Change: Fast and Furious Update
Tue, July 10, 2012After a House vote which found Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt for not releasing documents in the Fast and Furious scandal, the Department of Justice has unsealed an indictment charging five people with murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. They also announced a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the arrest of others involved.
According to Fox News:
"Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, praised the department Monday for its announcement but questioned the timing.
"I applaud what they're doing, but I condemn the timing. It's very clear that the timing has everything to do with the House of Representatives holding Eric Holder in contempt," Issa told Fox News.
Issa, who led the contempt push, said the Justice could have been doing more to find the suspects all along. He called the timing of the FBI reward money "another example of using politics over good policy."
It does seem quite ironic, and quite pathetic, that after all this time now is when the DOJ decides to indict people for Terry’s death during Operation Fast and Furious. After months of subpoenas and requests asking for documentation regarding this operation the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee was still being stonewalled by Eric Holder. Only after the House vote which found Eric Holder in contempt on a bi-partisan basis, has this indictment been released.
While we are all glad that someone is being held responsible for Brian Terry’s death, that does not change the fact that we still do not know who is responsible for the failed operation in the first place. Terry’s death, while the most tragic part of the operation, was only the symptom of a greater problem. The question still remains as to who authorized gun walking to Mexican drug cartels. Many critics believe this was part of a greater goal to allow the guns to “get lost” in Mexico in order to blame America’s gun policies on the increasing border violence.
While we are all thrilled to see justice being served to the trigger men in Terry’s death, we still have to get to the bottom of why the guns were in the bad guys’ hands and who authorized the operation that allowed them to be there.
