The Focus

For presidential elections, Central Florida’s region between Tampa and Daytona Beach is the most highly contested area of the state. Bush defeated John Kerry in Florida by five percent, because he won the I-4 corridor. Conversely, McCain lost Florida in 2008 because he lost Tampa, Orlando and Daytona.

The Facts

More than 40 percent of Florida’s registered voters live in counties straddling the interstate, which includes the burgeoning Orlando area.

Between 45 percent and 50 percent of Florida’s Republican voters live along the corridor, as do 40 percent to 45 percent of the state’s Democrats.
