The Obama Republican Meeting Buzz-kill
Tue, November 30, 2010Every news organization ran a host of commentary and predictions in anticipation for The Slurpee Summitt, otherwise known as the big meeting between Obama, top Republicans and Democrats, Pelosi and Reid. The outcome left the viewer less than enthused.
The Republican push for Bush-era tax cut extensions were at the top of the meeting's agenda. Currently, Americans of all tax-brackets face huge tax increases that is detrimental to economic growth. The Democratic Congress has put off making the decision on these cuts simply because they will not budge on the extensions for corporations who create jobs. So after the meeting, with 31 days left, there is still no deal on the Bush Tax Cut extensions.
But if you watched all of the pressers post-meeting, you would think the players all came together for a slumber party to discuss their feelings of their “spirits of bipartisanship,” “civil behavior,” and “the beginning of a new dialogue.”
Obama said he was encouraged by the “extremely civil” atmosphere from the meetings and Republicans and Democrats alike keep saying they get the message America is sending them. They aren’t getting the message that the American know the political rhetoric about feelings and sentiments do not put them back to work.
Democrats have prolonged their decision on these tax cut extensions long enough. The least that could have emerged out of this meeting was a deal on the tax cuts. Boehner said Washington needs to be reminded they are hired by Americans, not the other way around. The first job Americans have to delegate to Washington is to stop talking about getting to work and get to work.
