RightChange: Obama vs. Romney Race is Tightening
Thu, May 24, 2012A slew of recent polls show the gap between President Obama and Governor Romney is tightening as the summer months approach. On the issue of the economy, the polling states the two candidates are dead even, according to an ABC News/Washington Post survey. These economic numbers are critical for an incumbent trying to gain re-election, especially since the challengers are running on the “are you better off now than you were four years ago” platform. In answering that question, 30% of the respondents said they were worse off now than when Obama took office, compared to 16% saying they were in better shape.
CBS News and the New York Times began conducting polls on registered voters this past January and their data has shown a real ebb and flow between the two candidates. Romney held a slight edge over Obama in January and the most recent one, conducted May 11-13, where the Governor was ahead 46% to 43%. The President held slim leads in February and March and the two were tied in the month of April. Echoing a common theme, the CBS/NYTimes polls state the economy is by far the most important factor to which many of the American people will x vote for come November.
A Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday shows the Republican challenger with a 6-point lead in the key swing state of Florida, a number that would increase by two points should Florida Senator Marco Rubio be Romney’s running mate choice. Couple these positive polling numbers for the Governor with news out of the fundraising camps of the Republicans rallying behind their candidate with donations and it has been a good week for the GOP. Obama’s once huge fundraising advantage over Romney of 10-to-1 fizzed to a 2-to-1 lead after just one month of the Governor having the Republican Party base fully behind him.
All numbers appear to be trending up for the GOP and their presumptive-nominee Mitt Romney, but there are still more than five months to go. Expect swings in both directions as Election Day draws near and different issues become the hot news item of the day. But the Democrats and President Obama now know they will be in for the fight of their lives. The numbers don’t lie.
