RightChange: Boehner On Budget: It’s Not Going To Be Easy!
Wed, March 16, 2011After the November midterm elections, Republicans said they received the message loud and clear. The American people knew the result of the U.S. financial crisis was the result of irresponsible spending and catastrophic greed in Washington. So they gave Republicans one more chance to make the tough choices and fix their mistakes. Four months later, Republicans have passed cuts so small that they don’t even cover the interest on our debt alone-something Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is proud of.
“The House on Tuesday passed a stopgap measure to finance the government for an additional three weeks, despite growing opposition from conservative Republicans over the pace of spending cuts. The bill cuts $6 billion over three weeks and is expected to pass the Senate before a Friday deadline. Fifty-four House Republicans voted against the bill, and the GOP leadership needed help from Democrats to push it through. Boehner defended the legislation the House approved Tuesday, saying it amounted to $10 billion in immediate cuts over five weeks, including a two-week stopgap measure on which the government is currently operating. That measure expires Friday. “When was the last time you saw the government here in Washington cut anything?” he said.”
The sarcasm is hardly appreciated, Speaker Boehner. Americans didn’t vote you in as speaker to pass cuts that are almost as much as Nancy Pelosi’s. It is truly pathetic that we are talking about cuts that cover less than half of what Obama spent in the month of February myself. So what's with the White House negotiations?
“He said the GOP was “in conversations” with the White House and the Senate, and that he hoped to reach an agreement “as soon as possible.” Republicans want to cut less than 4% of the current deficit-that is not even including our budget. Why are Republicans even wasting their time with “conversations “ to meet Democrats half way when the numbers of cuts Republicans want are nowhere near what they should be. Republicans should stop negotiating with Democrats on cuts and negotiate with the American people. After all, it’s the American taxpayers money that was spent without any accountability.
