Right Change: Senators Call for Holder’s Resignation
Wed, June 13, 2012A rough two-month stretch for Attorney General Eric Holder has gotten even worse as law makers have now called for his resignation. Holder first began to feel pressure as he appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court in the controversial Arizona immigration and Obamacare hearings. Justices repeatedly berated Holder for the Obama administration legislation that did not exactly live up to the standards of the United States Constitution. This past week, Holder has faced charges of contempt and mismanagement in the botched “Fast and Furious” operation and has been accused of cover-up and providing “political cover” for the President in the White House security leaks disaster.
Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn personally asked Holder to resign as the two engaged in a heated exchange during Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings. “Americans deserve an attorney general who will be honest with them,” said Cornyn. “They deserve an attorney general who will uphold the basic standards of political independence and accountability. You have proven time and time again, sadly, that you’re unwilling to do so. I’m afraid we have come to an impasse… you have violated the public trust, in my view.”
Holder faces possible contempt charges over his reluctance to hand over documents related to the Fast and Furious fiasco. However, his biggest fault may be in appointing an Obama campaign supporter to investigate the security leaks. Ronald Machen, U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, has referred to the President as a “legend” at Harvard and admitted he was a great admirer of Obama. Machen also claimed he donated money to the President’s 2004 senate campaign. Are the American people really supposed to believe this man can do his job without bias?
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) called on the current administration to appoint an independent counsel to lead the investigation. “The damage to our national security has been articulated by many both in and outside the administration,” said McCain, emphasizing the need for nonpartisan investigators. However, Senate Democrats blocked the resolution before a vote was ever taken.
Whether Holder survives through the summer remains to be seen. Whether this current administration can make nonpartisan decisions without trying to further the campaign of the President is becoming clearer every day.
