Right Change: “Romney Leading Among Middle Class”

A new Gallup poll released this week shows Mitt Romney with a 5-point lead among middle class voters. Gallup labels those with a household income between $36,000 and $90,000 as middle class and also took data from the lower class (less than $36,000) and the upper class (above $90,000). Romney maintains the same 5-point lead among the upper class while President Obama holds a 15-point lead with those who make less than $36,000 a year. All of this might come as a surprise given the Obama campaign’s recent mission to paint the former Governor of Massachusetts as a “middle-class job killer.”

Just ten days ago, an ABC/Washington Post poll claimed both candidates were struggling to win over the middle class. The numbers stated more of these Americans thought Romney would do better reviving the economy, but thought Obama was more in touch with the interests of the middle class. However, and maybe most damning, is the statistic of the president’s approval rating among this group. Only 44% of those polled thought Obama was doing a good job. The polling numbers are starting to confirm what political insiders have thought for weeks: the Democrats attempt to portray Romney as a corporate stooge who would favor huge profits over job creation is a complete failure.

The Gallup poll includes more than 9,000 interviews with registered voters conducted between May 14 and June 3. One particularly interesting piece of this poll shows how the two candidates are doing with Independents.  See their breakdown below:

While one would expect the numbers to be this lopsided along party lines, the fact Romney holds an 8-point lead among middle class independents jumps off the page. With so many experts predicting the election will come down to swing-state independents, this latest poll confirms, the fact that the Romney camp holds all the momentum. And with the release of this week’s horrendous job news, don’t expect that momentum to change sides soon…if ever.
