Right Change: Obama’s Four-Year Campaign
Fri, June 08, 2012The Cabinet has been unlocked for the first time in a long time, and Obama’s members have spent the past few weeks traveling from state to swing state toeing the line on the Hatch Act as they push for their boss to be re-elected come November.
This is not altogether uncommon among Presidents running for a second term. George W. Bush did the same for his 2004 campaign. If President Obama had gotten down to business in the oval office for the past 3 years, we could give him a pass on sending his cabinet out like carrier pigeons. However, he has spent what seems like his entire term marketing himself, spending time putting on a good face instead of pushing to help our struggling nation. It is as if he began campaigning for this November as soon as he was inaugurated.
The way we see it, Obama has been halfway out the front door of the White House ready to hit the trail since the beginning. And now, when we really need him to pick up the pieces and do something to stop the downward spiral, he’s completely gone. He is too busy fundraising to be there for the American people, too busy to even send out a tweet, let alone make remarks, honoring the anniversary of D-Day. He has spent one third of the last 24 weekdays passing his hat around in various cities around the country. Who knows how many days that would be between now and his bid announcement last year (although we do know there have been 153 fundraisers since then). This can be easily argued as a flaw of the presidential position, and these claims may be valid, but it certainly doesn’t justify fundraising to such an extreme, twice as much as George W. Bush did, if not more.
Even after all this, Romney managed to out-earn President Obama this month, raising $16.8 million more than the President’s campaign.
We want to see a President who understands that there is still a job to do, despite a rapidly approaching election date. This is a critical time for America, with regards to many more issues other than the November vote. An estimated 14% of this country is without a job. Most who do have jobs now find themselves struggling to get by, make insurance payments or put gas in their car. To this our President responds with a smile and an outstretched hand…to ask for your donation. We think that a good campaign strategy for Obama might be to inspire some hope in his people by making good on the positive change he promised.
