Right Change: Is the Economy Improving?

It is always hard to know what to believe in an election year. Every speech, every released report, must be analyzed and picked apart to know if it can be trusted. But who has time for that? Most of us do not get paid to once-over these transcripts and numbers with a fine-tooth comb. At some level, you’ve just got to trust. However, some of the recent job growth and unemployment data being released by the White House seems so fishy, it stinks. The American people deserve to know the truth what’s behind these monthly reports.

The Obama Administration is finding creative ways to convince us the economy is improving. The latest tactic involves passing off a huge increase in people taking social security disability (SSDI) benefits as a drop in the unemployment numbers. According to a report by JPMorgan Chase, 2.2 million people have filed for SSDI since mid-2010. When people “go on the government’s payroll,” they are technically removed from the workforce, thereby not counting against unemployment numbers. Shrewd, huh?

Many people still choose to work even though disabled according to the government’s standard. But when work is impossible to come by, the average $1,100 of monthly income handed out under SSDI looks pretty tempting. According to Morgan Stanley, 99% of social security disability beneficiaries remain in the program until retirement age. So Obama gets to carry people on the taxpayer’s dime, often until age 62, while still claiming unemployment is dropping. What a wonderful opportunity for the president to have his cake and eat it too.

Despite the fact most Americans would not abuse disability income, $1,100 a month is a lot better than nothing and when faced with a choice, people do what they have to do to survive. Not to mention the amount of fraud these types of programs facilitate. Obama is using these people and programs to further his big government agenda while attempting to deceive the voters into believing his way is working. It isn’t and it never has. November is calling and it is time to put an end to all of the lies.
