Right Change: Disappointing Numbers in June 2012

This month’s numbers are in, and it’s not looking good, even compared to modestly optimistic predictions. On Friday, Reuters reported that consumer sentiment in America dropped to it’s lowest so far in 2012, from 79.3 last month to 73.2. Economists anticipated that the index would stay steady from May into June, but this was not the case. Instead, the reports were disconcertingly negative. Reuters said:

“News of economic developments heard by consumers was increasingly negative. When asked about their expectations for the unemployment rate, survey respondents were more likely to expect increases rather than declines.

Consumers were also more likely to report economic conditions had weakened recently and less likely to expect them to improve in the coming year.”

On top of that, the Commerce Department reported that the number of American’s filing new claims for jobless benefits is still too high to regard the job market as anything near stable. It is not expected to get any better in the coming months.

“The jobless rate rose in May for the first time since last August and could remain elevated as most states stop offering extended benefits to the long-term unemployed.”

This fact paired with the discouraged sentiment reported in the Reuters survey makes one thing very certain: America needs a change. Things aren’t as bad as they were a year ago, but they are still less than mediocre and showing no signs of improving drastically any time soon. In the coming months there is a massive opportunity to switch things up by voting fresh blood into the governing body. The dissatisfaction with the present and lack of optimism for the future that our country is, in fact, feeling needs to be channeled directly to the polls. America should not be a nation of cynical and unhopeful citizens bogged down by bad news and bleak outlooks, and the only way to change this is to elect officials who can turn this country around. So come November, use your votes. We need a little pick me up, and there’s nothing better for that than a fresh start.
