New claims for jobless benefits rise sharply

The newest jobless claim report indicates claims were the highest this week(472,000) over the past month. Some fear that hiring is lackluster and could slow the recovery. Economists were hoping for a better performance- most would like to see 425,000 or less a week. The Labor Dept. said private-sector growth was a concern with only 41,000 jobs in May. Census workers mainly accounted for the unemployment level to fall from 9.9% to 9.7%.
